Commissioning

What a Proper Commissioning Handover Should Contain

What a Proper Commissioning Handover Should Contain

The equipment runs — but can you prove it was installed correctly, and will the next engineer know what was done?

Commissioning ends with a document, not a handshake. Long after the installation team has left, the handover file is the only record of how the plant was set up and what it achieved on acceptance.

A complete file contains the as-built drawings and schematics, alignment and torque records, cable schedules with continuity and insulation results, instrument calibration certificates, PLC and drive parameter backups, and the results of every load and performance test.

It should also carry the settings that are easy to lose: protection relay settings, drive parameters, control set points and interlock logic. When a board is replaced three years later, those values are what let the plant restart the same day.

Finally, the file should record the operator training given and by whom. Plant that is commissioned well but handed over badly still ends up running at reduced availability within a year.
